Tennis Australia has partnered with Special Olympics Australia to help improve access to tennis for people with intellectual disabilities and autism over the next four years, from 2021 to 2024.
The partnership aims to ensure that the more than 850,000 Australians with intellectual disabilities and autism, an often isolated community, are welcomed and provide them with a range of opportunities to experience the many benefits of tennis.
The collaboration between Tennis Australia and Special Olympics Australia will focus on the following four key areas…
- School Programs and Events: Offer tennis programs and events for special schools, special education units and mainstream schools for students with developmental disabilities and / or autism.
- Coach Development: Develop the capacity of grassroots tennis coaches to enable the delivery of quality inclusive programs.
- Club Engagement: Connect tennis clubs to the Special Olympics movement through the Special Olympics Australia Affiliate Program.
- Tournaments: organization of co-branded national and national tournaments and events for players with intellectual disabilities and / or autism.
Tennis Australia Managing Director Craig Tiley said: “The sport is an essential part of our Australian culture and this partnership between Tennis and Special Olympics is another way to increase access to participation and competitive opportunities for players with intellectual disabilities and autism.
“At Tennis, we strive to be open and welcoming to everyone. Working with Special Olympics will help us provide more opportunities for everyone and at all levels to play our great sport. “
Special Olympics Australia Managing Director Pierre Comis adds: “We are proud to continue our partnership with Tennis Australia. Our collaboration on a range of participation initiatives will improve the opportunities for more people with intellectual disabilities to get involved in tennis. Tennis is an important and popular sport within Special Olympics because it is aimed at players of all skill levels and players of all ages.
“Tennis is a lifelong sport that is fun to learn and provides lifelong health results for participants. Our continued partnership with Tennis Australia will strengthen the ability of tennis coaches to be more inclusive and create greater opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to participate and form a lifelong connection to the sport. “
