NORRISTOWN — The 53rd Annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games, the organization’s largest statewide competition, will host nearly 750 coaches, 1,500 athletes and unified partners representing 38 SOPA Special Programs Thursday through Saturday at Penn State University.

More than 1,000 volunteers will be on site throughout the weekend. This is the first time the SOPA Summer Games competition will be held in person since the start of the pandemic.

The Games will kick off at Penn State University with opening ceremonies at the Pegula Ice Arena.

Throughout the weekend, SOPA athletes will compete in track and field, basketball, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming and tennis.

Swaim Wins MVP Title

HARRISBURG — The West beat the East, 49-14, last weekend in the PSFCA Small Schools East-West Match at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium.

Bedford’s Mercury Swaim was the MVP and ran for three touchdowns and threw two more. He finished 13 for 20 with 253 passing yards and rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries.

Conemaugh Valley’s Logan Kent and Bald Eagle Area’s Garrett Burns each ran for touchdowns for the West. Keith Charney of Windber and Griffin Larue of Richland caught touchdown passes. Clearfield’s Karson Kline had three catches for 64 yards.

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic’s Deven Wyandt punted 44 yards for West.

Central’s Josh Waite had four tackles and Bellwood-Antis’ Sean Mallon had three tackles.

Lady Vikings Chosen

FLINTON — Glendale’s Alyson Buterbaugh, Riley Best and Madison Peterson have been selected to the Moshannon Valley League Softball All-Star Team.

Others selected were Makenzie Daniels and Abby Gilson from Moshannon Valley, Greysyn Gable and Madison Nelson from West Branch, and Joslynne Freyer and Makenzie Wall from Curwensville.

ICC stars named

SAXTON — Claysburg-Kimmel’s Pressten Imler has been selected as the first-team outfielder for the Inter-County Conference South baseball all-star team.

CK’s Dante Francona was an honorable mention pick as a Designated Player.

Eion Snider (outfielder) and Brooks Snider (infielder) of Northern Bedford County were selected with honorable mention.
