Seniors prepare to compete in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.

Hundreds of seniors are registering for the 2022 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics to be held
September 10-24,” says NVSO President Herb Levitan. More than 70 individual events will be organized in 25 different locations
sites throughout Northern Virginia. “We are also celebrating our 40th anniversary,” said Levitan who
participating for 20 years. “In 1982, there were far fewer events offered and only a few hundred attendees,” Levitan said. “We’ve grown to nearly 800 attendees and over 70 events,” he said.

A new event this year is weightlifting for men and women. It will offer three events: back squat,
shoulder press and deadlift. Other events include athletics, ERG rowing, cycling, swimming, diving, Wii bowling, tenpin bowling, eight and nine ball pool, tennis, scrabble, crossword , croquet, Mexican dominoes, sudoku, handball, rummikub, football and throwing Frisbee, hitting and throwing softball, puzzles, Mah Jongg, pétanque, horseshoes, cribbage, cornhole throwing , pickleball, table tennis, 5K Trail running, basketball field goals and free throw, orienteering, field events, racquetball, bunco, line dancing, miniature golf, bridge doubles, Canasta and badminton. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded after each event.

Most events are contested by gender in age brackets of 5 and 10 years. All events are open to the public. Registration is online only at www.nvso.us. The registration fee is $20 and covers an unlimited number of events. Additional charges apply for bowling, orienteering and cycling. A full list of rules and event locations is available on the website along with photos and results from last year. Adults age 50 by December 31 who live in a sponsoring jurisdiction are eligible to participate. There is no registration on site or by mail.

NVSO is sponsored by the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. NVSO is also supported by Gold Patrons who donate $1,000 to enable NVSO to purchase and replace equipment and services, promote participation and provide recognition awards. 100% of donated money is used entirely for NVSO activities. It is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization.
