Sadiq Khan aims to bring the Olympics back to London in 2036

Sadik Khan hopes the Olympics will return in 14 years under his ambition to shoot London in the sports capital of world.

The 2012 Games were widely considered the greatest of all time and the mayor believes that the environmental case for reusing existing sports facilities has never been stronger.

On Wednesday, he briefly took center stage with the San Francisco Giants. stadium when he kicked off the opening ceremony, dressed in a giant oversized shirt with his name on the back and wearing a baseball cap.

This follows news that, under a City Hall-orchestrated deal, American League baseball games will once again be played in London from next summer.

When the mayor was introduced to the 21,472 fans during an interval, he received a “modest reception” from the crowd, according to sports radio station KNBR.

Mr. Khan arrived on Wednesday in Los Angeles, which is to host the Games in 2028, after Paris, which was chosen as the host city in 2024.

This will be the third time that Paris and Los Angeles will be host cities, equaling London’s record.

The International Olympic Committee is three years away from deciding the host country for 2036, but sports fan Mr Khan believes major sporting events can attract tourists from across Europe to London and boost the economy.

He told ITV London: “One of the things I have made very clear on this trip is my aspiration to make London the sporting capital of the world – not just American football, baseball, boxing, tennis, cricket etc. but at some point we would also like the Olympics to come back.

“LA will host the Olympics after Paris, in 2028. LA has now hosted the Olympics three times, as has London.

“If so, we want to have a world that is green, that is sustainable, but also includes Olympic Games that are sustainable – not by building empty stadiums but by reusing stadiums and facilities that already exist. .”

Mr Khan, who is on the fourth day of a tourism and trade mission to the United States, is due to meet Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti before announcing next steps in a key social policy engagement , the details of which are being kept secret until tomorrow.

His journey ends Thursday evening after a visit to Universal Pictures in Hollywood and the announcement of a link with the London film industry.
