TROY, NY – For the first time in its current format, the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Committee has selected individuals from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to compete in the women’s tennis championship singles and doubles competitions. of the 2022 NCAA Division III. Student-athletes Alex Mednikova and Rani Jones will represent the Engineers in singles and doubles tournaments at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando May 27-29.

A junior, Mednikova (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had the opportunity to play singles and doubles. RPI’s No. 1 in singles, she is 21-6 this season, including 15-5 in doubles and 6-1 in tournament play. She has played in eight Liberty League games, winning seven, and is 8-2 in her last 10 games. She leads the conference in overall wins (21) and wins No. 1 in singles (15). Mednikova was the second-ranked player in NCAA Region II and 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region. She was a four-time Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week.

She and Jones (Newmarket, MD/Oakdale), a fellow junior and captain, will compete in doubles after being the top-ranked team in Region II. They are 10th in the Northeast. In 23 games together in 2021-22, the pair went 18-5 overall to lead the Liberty League in total wins. They were 13-4 in doubles games at No. 1, 5-1 in tournaments and 7-0 in conference games. Mednikova and Jones, who are four-time Liberty League doubles Team of the Week winners, are riding an eight-game winning streak and are 9-1 in their last 10 games.

They both helped Engineers to a school record 13 wins (13-8) and a victory in the Liberty League Tournament. RPI, who is coached by Justin Roelost in the semi-finals.

For the NCAA Individual Championships, the National Committee selected a percentage of singles players and doubles teams from each of the eight regions. Individual championships consist of 32 players in singles and 16 teams in doubles. Selection is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and student-athlete eligibility and availability. The draws will be announced on May 25.
