LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Local Jersey Mike’s is donating 100% of its Wednesday sales to the Nebraska Special Olympics team.
For 12 years, Jersey Mike’s has considered the month of March to be its “Month of Giving”. Last year they raised over $15 million and hope to raise even more this year.
Throughout the month, customers donated and supported local athletes to travel to Florida to compete in the 2022 games.
A total of 30 athletes from Nebraska will compete in 19 different sports throughout the week-long event.
Three Lincoln athletes will go and Haley Wagoner, 32, is one of them. It’s her second time and says she’s happy to have joined Special Olympics 15 years ago.
“I just wanted to join a team, when I was growing up I didn’t have a team. A lot of doctors said I couldn’t do it and I wanted to play with it like my brother and sister had a team and I never had a team, so joining was just amazing that I finally got to do it,” Waggoner said.
the Special Olympics take place every four years, like the traditional Olympic Games. In recent matches, Wagoner has won tennis gold and hopes to repeat this year.
She was also one of nine people who helped design the official logo for the 22 games.
The Special Olympics will be held in Orlando, Florida from June 5-12.
