The ATP Tour 500, also known as the ATP World Tour 500, ATP International Series Gold and ATP Championship Series tournaments, represents the fourth highest level of the annual men’s tennis tournament after the Grand Slams, ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000.
The Astana Open, a tournament for professional tennis players, will host the event at the Nur-Sultan National Tennis Center, which has 24 all-weather tennis courts in a park by the Yessil River. It will bring together the best players in the world, including Daniil Medvedev from Russia, who has confirmed his participation.
“The ATP’s decision to approach us as a priority candidate to host the ATP Tour 500 tournament affirms that we have chosen the right strategy using world best practices to develop tennis in Kazakhstan,” said the President of the KTF and Vice President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Bulat Utemuratov.
Previously, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ATP Tour 500 was canceled in Beijing during the China Open, an annual men’s and women’s professional tennis tournament in China.
The ATP Tour 250, the lowest tier of annual men’s tennis tournaments, was hosted by the Astana Open in 2020 and 2021. Now, following a decision by the ATP to move the China Open from Beijing to the Astana Open, the city will host the ATP Tour 500 for the first time.
“It should be noted that this tournament is taking place in a pivotal year for us: Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina was exceptional in winning her first Wimbledon championship – a historic victory for the country – and the KTF is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year” , Utemuratov added. .
In July, Rybakina, a tennis player from Kazakhstan, won the Wimbledon women’s singles finalthe first grand slam for her and for the country.
