LEXINGTON — The News Journal’s 89th Junior Tennis Tournament wrapped up Tuesday night at the Lakewood Racquet Club with possibly the best final of any age group this year.

The Boys 16-U final between Lexington High School teammates Karl Etzel and Dylan Catanese was a climactic battle from the jump, as Etzel just edged Catanese 6-2, 3-6, 11- 9 in the decisive third set in a match. where gatherings of 10 to 20 shots were common. Both displayed solid groundstrokes, solid court positioning, effective forehands, solid net play and overall pushed each other to the last point.

Karl Etzel won the boys 16 and under junior tennis tournament.
Dylan Catanese finished second in the Junior Boys 16 & Under Tennis Tournament.

“We’ve been playing against each other for a while,” Etzel said of the competition between him and Catanese. “We played last year in the News Journal final and I won in a third set tie-break. I didn’t really have a game plan today. I know it’s a good player. I had to fight to win all the points I could.”

“We have a good rivalry,” Catanese said. “We are both quite strong players. Obviously we train a lot against each other in the same team. He is really talented. It was a good challenge for me. It was a good game. I want to continue to improve myself.”

In the boys 18 and under final – played right next to the boys 16 and under final – Ethan Remy beat Ryan Mecurio in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. His play was clear and precise in Tuesday’s final.

Ethan Remy won the 18-and-under boys' junior tennis tournament.

“I think I played very well today,” said Remy. “My field shots worked really well and my groundstrokes were good. My serve can be better, especially my first serve.”

Another final throughout the tournament that was also well contested was in the boys 14 and under, where Philip Etzel beat Tony Palmer last Thursday 6-4, 7-6.

Philip Etzel was the winner of the boys 14 and under junior tennis tournament.
