‘It’s awesome!’ – Ruud hailed as ‘the merit of our game’ by McEnroe

Casper Ruud has earned the respect of four-time US Open champion John McEnroe as the Norwegian is set to win his first title in New York.

The world number seven started the year without a Slam quarter-final under his belt but has since reached a Masters 1000 final in Miami and two major finals at Roland Garros and now the US Open.

Not only is he making a second Slam final, the 23-year-old could even be ranked world number one after the tournament.

“Casper did very well, he supported Roland-Garros, I’m impressed and he looks great,” McEnroe told Eurosport. “He has a chance to win this thing. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Casper Ruud could be world number one in a few days.

Ruud and Alcaraz are not only playing for their first major title, but also for a direct shootout for world number one, as the winner will top the standings on Monday.

“It’s great, he’s humble, he’s not going to set the stadium on fire with his charisma like an Alcaraz or Frances Tiafoe, but he’s a credit to our game,” McEnroe continued. “He is extremely solid, he works hard, I think I spent the last two years at Nadal Academy, seeing how Rafa [Nadal] did things, helped him realize that he had to do even more.
