Australian Open director Craig Tiley predicts that Novak Djokovic will be keen to prove he’s still the best player in the world.
After his detention and deportation in January due to his stance on vaccinations, the Australian government said this week that the Serb had been granted a temporary visa, allowing him to play at the 2023 Australian Open.
In a recent interview with the Australian publication ageCraig Tiley claimed that given his current form, you could say he is the best player in the world.
He added that the 21-time Grand Slam champion is a phenomenal tennis player who has already had huge success in Australia. He claims that the Serb will be pushed to defend his title with the young competition taking part in the tournament:
“If you look [Djokovic’s] form – you can say he is the best player in the world. He’s an amazing tennis player and that’s where he’s won the most, he’ll be very hungry not to let the young guys on the men’s side take the title away from him.”
Carlos Alcaraz is one of the hottest young players who Tiley believes will usher in a change of course at the Australian Open 2023:
“I think this could be the year I’ve been around long enough to know that the Australian Open is digging up and uncovering the greats of the future.”
‘I want to go back, I want to play tennis’ – Novak Djokovic after being cleared for Australian Open 2023
Recently, Novak Djokovic was informed that his Australian visa had been reinstated and he could compete for a record 10th Australian Open title.
The Serb expressed his joy at the good news, saying it was a relief considering everything he and his loved ones had to go through in this difficult year:
“I was very happy to receive the news yesterday. Yeah, it was obviously a relief to know what me and the people closest to me have been through this year with what happened in Australia and after the Australia obviously. I couldn’t get any better news for sure,” Novak Djokovic told an ATP Finals press conference, “I want to go back there, I want to play tennis, do what I do the best.”
Considering the overwhelming reaction the Serb received just a few months ago, it will be interesting to see how the Australians react to his arrival.
