MARION — High school athletes, their parents and coaches, and support staff already know this. Fall sports are here.
Both high school golf and women’s tennis have already played matches and everyone is training ahead of the season.
It is a time of hope and hard work. It is a time of anticipation and anxiety. It’s a time for goals and achievement.
In short, it’s time!
Like the coaches and athletes we cover, the Marion Star is also putting together its game plan for the 2022 portion of the 2022-23 school year.
Here’s what you can expect in the coming weeks:
⋙ Tomorrow we will run the composite schedule for all 10 football teams in the region for the 10 weeks of the regular season. To go along with that, I have an article on some of the most interesting games to come.
⋙ Starting Tuesday, we will feature one football team preview per day (except Sunday August 14 which will have two previews). The order in which the teams will appear has not been determined, but rest assured they will all be featured along with the 2022 schedule, 2021 results and detailed information for each team. Stay tuned.
⋙ Women’s tennis will get its roundup on Wednesday followed by golf on Thursday and soccer on Friday. Team-by-team golf and football capsules will also be presented exclusively online on MarionStar.com and its app.
⋙ In the longer term, boys’ and girls’ volleyball and cross-country will have their time between August 22 and 24. These sports will also have team-by-team capsules online.
As for the beats of the fall season, here’s a tentative rundown of what to expect each day of the week once it all kicks off in earnest.
⋙ Most Tuesdays, but occasionally Wednesdays, the Best of the Week columns will highlight the past week’s achievements by non-football teams and athletes in the region. Also look for the ever-popular Marion Star Boys and Girls Best of the Week Performer polls and poll results from the previous week.
⋙ Wednesdays will be devoted to a subject centered on football. It could be a problem or a player’s profile. Additionally, on Wednesdays we will post the weekly league standings and fixtures as well as a set of region football stats after week 3.
⋙ On Thursdays, we will preview Friday night matches. There will be a central story about the biggest, most impactful, or most intriguing game, and there will be capsules about other games in the region.
⋙ Fridays will see the return of the Friday Night Picks column. Sometimes it’s an overview; sometimes it stretches over a nugget that I have gleaned; Sometimes it’s a lighthearted look at high school football, but in the column, I’ll not only make the picks for every game on file this week, but explain my thinking in making that pick.
⋙ Saturdays are electronic editions, so that’s usually where I write a weekly column, although Monday can also be a landing point for the column. It’s usually local in focus, but it’s also a chance to delve into topics of national or statewide interest. Ohio State football and basketball are regular material, sometimes it’s the Cleveland Cavaliers and the NBA, sometimes it’s NCAA problems (and there are plenty of them), sometimes it’s is OHSAA, whatever it is, I hope it’s fun, informative, or better yet, both.
⋙ Due to time constraints, high school football coverage will appear in print on Sundays. However, on Friday night/Saturday morning it can be found online at MarionStar.com and its app. We’ll cover some games and round up the rest each week. Online, fans can access our site and see Twitter updates from the games, as well as view the Friday Night Scoreboard as well as photo galleries of the games we’ve covered and vote on our Football Player of the Poll. the Week.
⋙ Soccer, volleyball, golf, women’s tennis and cross-country skiing will also be dispersed during the fall months. Whether it’s reporting on an athlete, taking a closer look at a team, or covering what happened in a big game, game or encounter, the sports other than football will not be forgotten.
This is the game plan for the Star. Like the team game plans we cover, there may be halftime adjustments, but rest assured that we will do our best to bring you the content athletes deserve and readers demand.
