Game, set and match: Grimsby Tennis Club hosts international wheelchair tennis tournament

Wheelchair tennis stars take to the court this month in a bid to be crowned the winner of this year’s wheelchair tennis tournament in Grimsby.

From June 14-17, Grimsby Tennis Club is hosting the ‘Janco Steel Wheelchair Tennis Classic’, which will see 30 athletes from around the world compete on the court. There will be competitors from Canada, the United States, Israel and Japan.

Hometown heroes Gillian Mauro of Grimsby and Gary Luker of Stoney Creek will compete for the top prize.

There will be men’s and women’s competition, in singles and doubles. There is also a separate quad category for players with upper body loss of function.

Anne Luxon, who helps promote the event, said the talent of the wheelchair tennis players is “incredible” and encouraged people to come out and support them.

She wants “people to come cheer on the athletes, fill the stands and show their support.”

Free entry.
