WARSAW – Warsaw Community Schools celebrated the opening of their new tennis complex near the high school football pitch with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, August 17.
WCS Superintendent, Dr. David Hoffert, WCS Board Members, WCS Tennis Players and many others attended the event.
The complex includes 10 courts.
The grand opening was just in time for the Warsaw Community High School men’s tennis team‘s home opener against Huntington North High School on Wednesday night.
Hoffert said the complex was completed a month ago, but WCS is still waiting for the benches and bleachers to arrive. Enough work had been completed by the spring to allow the WCHS women’s tennis team to train there.
Hoffert said school officials realized two years ago that new tennis courts were needed to replace old courts, which had been resurfaced many times over the years.
“Our (old) courts were original in high school, so they had 30 years of really good life in them,” Hoffert said, adding that he hoped the new courts would last another 30 years. The old courts need to be removed to add additional parking, he said.
“We really worked with our tennis coaches to help design (the new complex). We did a lot of different field trips, I guess you would call them, to check out other tennis courts in northern Indiana to see what worked, what didn’t in the process of design,” Hoffert said.
He said he spoke with some of the tennis players on Wednesday to see what they thought of the new courts.
“And I mean they just had big smiles on their faces and they said, ‘We love them,'” he said. “It’s going to be such a big improvement for our kids and just being able to put on community events and IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association) chapters and regionals, you know that’s something that’s good. for our entire community.”
He also said the project has benefited from people “who have been very generous in their donations”.
Hoffert said he hopes parents enjoy the new complex because the design allows for a better view.
“Our old courts always had the problem of being in the sun because they were facing the wrong direction,” Hoffert noted. He also added that coaches have more space to instruct their players during their matches due to the way the complex is designed.
“I hope this brings a lot of pride to our programs and recognizes the hard work these kids do as student-athletes and the hard work our coaches do with them,” Hoffert said of the resort.
