Davis Cup issued a statement saying:

“A member of the Spanish Davis Cup team tested positive for COVID-19 during the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals in Madrid.

“Following receipt of this information, the COVID-19 follow-up test protocol was implemented in coordination with the COVID-19 protocol manager and the Covid-19 independent medical manager.

The member who tested positive will remain in isolation under the supervision of the RFET Chief of Medical Services.

“The rest of the Spanish team underwent another PCR test this afternoon.”

Alcaraz posted a statement on his Instagram profile, stating:

“Hello everyone, I wanted to communicate that today I tested positive for Covid-19, which will prevent me from playing the Davis Cup which I was so excited about.

“The Saturday we first met with the team, I had a PCR that I gave negative and every other day antigen tests and all negative. I’m sad about how I’m missing such an important and super special tournament for me as the Davis Cup, I was very excited to be able to play and represent my country here in Madrid in front of my people, but sometimes things go wrong. It’s not going the way you want … and you have to overcome it, it’s very hard stick but you will have to get up in the face of this situation and come out stronger.

“At the moment I’m doing very well with very mild symptoms and we’ll see how that plays out.

“Lots of encouragement to the whole team that I will be cheering on and watching on TV.

“Thank you for all of your support.”

Spain are due to face Ecuador on Friday afternoon.
