MIDLAND, Texas— Utah State men’s tennis was represented by the senior duo David Cierny and second Sergi Micó Fenollar on day one of competition at the Midland Invite on Friday.
In the first round of the singles draw, Cierny edged past Oklahoma’s Baptiste Anselmo, 7-5, 6-2. Cierny’s run in the main draw ended in the second round against Texas A&M’s Noah Schachter, ranked No. 19 in the preseason ITA rankings, in a 6-4, 6-4 loss.
Micó Fenollar fell short in his first-round match against Texas Tech’s Isaac Arturo Arevalo, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Arevalo, who started his career at Utah State as a rookie in 2019-20 before transferring to Texas Tech, was ranked No. 51 in the preseason ITA rankings. Micó Fenollar bounced back to defeat SMU’s Louis Cloud, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In doubles, the pair lost in the first round of the main draw to the Red Raider partnership of Arevalo and Tyler Stewart, 9-7.
Singles and doubles matches are scheduled to continue on Saturday.
