Behrend Football Teams Open Seasons at Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament


ERIE, Pa. — Penn State Behrend’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a 4-1 win over Franciscan in the first round of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. The Lions lost to Baldwin Wallace in the championship game. The men’s team finished the tournament with two draws.

Behrend’s cross country, volleyball, golf, tennis and water polo teams were also in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

men’s soccer

Penn State Behrend 0, Franciscan 0

Sam York, a senior from Akron, Ohio, made five saves against Franciscan.

Women’s football

Baldwin Wallace 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Penn State Behrend 4, Franciscan 1

Mia Zec, a Cranberry Township junior, scored twice in each of Behrend’s games in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. Pittsburgh senior Bella Sestito had a goal and an assist against Franciscan.

Men’s Cross Country

Sixth (out of eight teams) at the Houghton Invitational

Nick Temel, a senior from Conneaut Lake, finished the 5k race in 16:59.99, placing 38th. Aidan Domencic, a senior from Cranberry Township, finished in 17:01.81, placing 40th. One of his shoes came off a quarter mile into the run.

Women’s Cross Country

Fourth (out of eight teams) at the Houghton Invitational

Olivia Nola, a sophomore from Erie, completed the 4K run in 15:07.18. She placed fourth in a field of 81 riders. Lindsey Hartle, a freshman from Pittsburgh, finished in 15:55.06. She placed 15th.

Women’s volleyball

Penn Behrend State 3, Buffalo State 2

Rochester 3, Pennsylvania Behrend 0

Hiram 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Brooke Joncas, a Corry senior, had 16 kills and 10 digs against Hiram. Meg Goodsel, a Corry junior, had a career-high 30 assists against Buffalo State.

Fourth (out of six teams) at Wooster Gatorade Intercollegiate Tournament

Belle Vernon junior Jake Caldwell is tied for ninth with a two-day score of 150. Ryan Johnson, a Center Hall senior, is tied for 13th with a two-day score of 152.

women’s tennis

Geneva 5, Penn State Behrend 4

Erica Jasinski, a Fairview senior, won first in singles with scores of 6-2, 6-2. She teamed with Allison Park senior Rachel Weber to win at No. 1 in doubles, finishing 8-3.

Men’s water polo

Long Island University 20, Penn State Behrend 4

Ethan Friedman, a freshman from Valley Center, Calif., made eight saves. He also recorded two interceptions.
