Alex Degabriele reaches first place in doubles in a major tournament in Cyprus

Maltese tennis sensation Alex Degabriele has won doubles gold at the ITF4, a ranked international tournament held in Cyprus.

Along with Britain’s Oliver Hauge, the two fought their way to the final, where they beat top seeds Dominic Ducariu (Germany) and Oleg Grzegorzewski (Poland) 7-6 and 6 -4.

Prior to that, the Malta-Great Britain duo overcame tough opposition in the form of Israeli opponents in their opening round. They then beat a Cypriot duo in the quarter-finals 6-2, 6-2.

In a dominating display, they beat their semi-final opponents 6-1, 6-1, paving the way to the final, and later, first place.

Later this year, Degabriele will take his game to the United States after signing a deal with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he will kick off his professional career as a Colonial Athletic Association regular.

The success in Larnaca was not the first of his repertoire. Alex has dominated his sport nationally and internationally, scoring impressive results overseas, most recently in Turkey.

His most recent performances have seen him reach a semi-final and a final in as many ranked competitions.
